“Lift your head, baby don’t be scared of the things that could go wrong along the way..” Who wouldn’t start singing behind their heads after recognizing these famous lyrics from Eraserheads’ hit song “With a Smile”? The legendary group that was formed in 1989 has indeed left a legacy not only in the Philippine music scene but also in the hearts of millions of Filipinos around the world. From “Ultraelectromagnetic Pop”, “Circus”, “Cutterpillow”, “Fruitcake”, “Sticker Happy”, to “Carbon Stereoxide”, perhaps every 90s kid would have at least one or two of these cassette tapes that has been cherished for a lifetime.
Being one of the most influential, critically acclaimed and significant OPM bands ever formed, Eraserheads is a testament that “forever is existent”. The band made waves since it released its first album “Ultraelectromagneticpop” in 1993. In fact, it is the only Filipino artist to have ever received the “Viewer’s Choice” award at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York in 1997. Their third album, “Cutterpillow” achieved platinum status for a number of times.
Last Friday, front man Ely Buendia revealed that Eraserheads is finally releasing a numbered limited edition vinyl copy of their first album, “Ultraelectromagenticpop” in celebration to its 25th anniversary. Of course, it features an imprint of the written lyrics just like how it was back in the 90s. Ely captioned it as “They’re home”. This debut album was actually recorded on a tight budget with a not so grand production. The release of the copy was delayed for one year due to the need to undergo two test presses before approval. In Ely’s own words, “It feels kind of like the first time that the album came out on compact disc and cassette.” Though “Ultraelectromagneticpop” isn’t the title holder of being Eraserheads’ best selling album, they chose this compilation to release a vinyl record as it paved the way of many OPM songs and bands since its release. The format of the songs in the vinyl copy was kept as is from the original recording. You can grab your copy starting October to early November this year.
