Who says fresh faces can’t be the lead star in their film debut? If you ever think that way, you better think again then, because the West Side Story remake’s female lead is an incredibly new actress and here’s all the things you just have to know about her.
Rachel Zegler is a 17 year old high school student and she’s been assigned to play the role of Maria among 30,000 applicants alongside an all-star cast and opposite to Ansel Elgort. How lucky could she be, right? We mean, if we get the chance to act alongside that guy, we don’t think we could ever get to think straight again.
As a Colombian-American, playing a Latina character is everything to Rachel and she couldn’t be more happy to represent the Hispanic community on the big screen.
Oh and also though this may be her first film debut, Rachel sure is no stranger to the theatre scene as she’s starred in local productions and even had the chance o play the character of Maria, herself which was why it was thrilling for her to be able to reprise the role and this time in a film directed by none other than Steven Spielberg.
The casting for the film was open as Steven Spielberg wanted actual Latina and Latino actors to play the role of the Puerto Rican gang in the story. They took it to Twitter and that was where they spotted her.
Now, Rachel is excited to begin production and we can’t help but cheer her on. You go girl! We’re excited to see you on the big screen!
